| The portal conventions
within this walkthrough are: Blue portal = Enter | Red portal = Exit This helps simplifying the description. Of course you are free to shoot your portals the way you like it best. |
01 / The Refinery Room 1
After climbing the steps and passing through two doors, you enter the refinery room. On the left you will spot the control room. There is not much to do in the refinery room at the moment, so why not enter the control room right now (using the switch on the door's rght side)?
02 / The Control Room 1
At the opposite wall there is a large note on the withe board. Read it to find out what had happened to Gunard 4-17e. A nagging signal will disturb you. Turn left to the monitor on the wall. From time to time a message from Gunard will overlay the running routine, begging for help to free him from the JCCDD. No good soul could ignore this heartbreaking cry for help.
Turn left again and look up. What you see is a reflective cube in a metal cage. To get it, mind the three small arrows on the ceiling. They show you the direction where to aim and shoot a red portal at the ceiling inside the cage. Just aim a little below the arrows. This is kind of tricky, you may need several attempts. Now shoot a blue portal somwhere at the wall and step through. Step from the cube, shoot a red portal at the wall inside the cage, grab the cube and step out.
Near the opposite wall there is a square on the floor (at the floor button's right side). Take the cube there and drop it on the square. Turn around and step on the elevator platform. From here, shoot a red portal at the wall behind the floor button (a little above it), and a blue portal at the floor below the cube. This will drop the cube on the floor button, which will activate the elevator platform, taking you up.
Turn around and push the button in order to activate the laser. Jump down from the platform (don't burn yourself!) and lift the cube from the floor button. This will lower the elevator platform. Take the reflective cube and place it there on an exact position to redirect the laser to the laser receiver after the platform has risen again. How to find the right position? Enter the platform from the front side (opposite the laser receiver) and walk to the end. Turn around and walk backwards to the end. Align the cube exactly in the direction of the laser receiver and drop it. Careful now: Turn left or right, in order to leave the platform without pushing the cube. Step on the floor button to lift the reflective cube into the laser beam. If you did adjust it right, this will open a secret door on the left to reveil the catapult.
Enter the room to get to the catapult - only to notice that there is a gate blocking access. In order to open it, get back to the cube and put it on the floor button. Now we are nearly there.
Don't step on the catapult right now if you want to avoid a bad headache. Instead, just shoot a blue portal at the ceiling right above it. Leave the control room.
03 / The Refinery Room 2
After stepping through the door, look up left. There is a portal area inside the logo of the large Aperture sign. Shoot a red portal at it and go back to the control room.
04 / The Control Room 2
Now it is time for a good jump. Step on the catapult and let yourself be carried to the balustrade of the refinery room. If you want to see where you are flying to, step backwards on the catapult.
05 / The Refinery Room 3 (Balustrade)
All you see here at the moment are the lifted platforms - and a weighted cube. Take it and jump down.
06 / The Refinery Room 4
There is a raised section opposite the balustrade. Take the cube there, walk up the stairs and put the cube on the cube button in the middle of the section. This will lower the platforms on the balustrade - a good opportunity for another jump.
07 / The Control Room 3
Enter the control room and step on the catapult to return to the balustrade.
08 / The Refinery Room 5 (Balustrade)
After arriving, try to avoid the laser near the floor. Look around - you will detect another cube at the far end. Unfortunately, it is not the reflective cube you would need to redirect the laser beam, so there is another step required on your way to the salvation of Gunard 4-17e. Fetch the cube, jump down and return to the control room.
09 /The Control Room 4
Take the reflective cube from the floor button and put the weighted button there instead. Carrying the reflective button, step on the catapult in order to take it to the balustrade.
10 / The Refinery Room 6 (Balustrade)
Facing the back wall (the laser beam in front of you), place the reflective cube directly opposite the laser receiver in the laser beam. This will open the door to leave the refinery room. Enter the elevator and push the "Down" button.
11 / The Lounge
The lounge you are entering, showing pictures of the person we owe our respect for all there is around, should not tempt you to dwell here for too long. Think of the distress Gunard is going through and walk on. This opens the Transition Room and, after the clearance process, the way to the passage.
12 / The Passage 1
You could set out to the Aperture Drama Project right now, only to find out that it is closed until further notice, as announced in the control room. Better not waste any more time and proceed on your rescue mission. Turn right to the JCCDD.
13 / The Dark Zone 1
At the end of the passage, jump down to the platforms leading you through the Dark Zone, separating the Correction Camp from all other Aperture units. Follow the platforms (the two sky light beams showing the approximate direction) until you approach the camp tower.
14 / The Camp Tower
Before you are too near, notice the balcony way up and shoot a red portal at it. Then, after arriving at the tower, shoot a blue portal at the wall. Step through to the balcony. Finally, here we are: the main entrance to the Johnson Correction Camp for Digital Disorders. Open the door by activating the security lock (using the switches on the left and right within three seconds) and enter the tower. Step into the elevator and go down - way down.
15 / The Love Zone
Correction is love. You will soon learn what is behind this motto. Follow the corridor and open the main gate. Walk in the accomodation zone fo the other "guests". You may watch them for a while if you have the nerve to do so. As you cannot do anything for them at the moment, you could as well proceed to the Audition Room Two on the opposite side.
16 / Audition Room Two
Meet Gunard, undergoing the correction process. Don't let yourself be misleaded: They are doing it because they love him. In case you have a different stance to the issue, turn right, walk to the computer and push the button in order to shut off the correction machine. Surprisingly, Gunard seems to be overjoyed about his liberation, though he will have to forgo the exuberant love he was receiving here from now on. After he left the room, a signal announces the emergency opening of the guest apartements - obviously caused by Gunard. After a while, you will be able to leave, too. You will notice that all guests have left the building, apparently just as ungrateful as Gunard.
Call the elevator, go up to the balcony and jump down to the platform.
17 / The Dark Zone 2
The public announcement by Aperture's crisis intervention team you are hearing now tells a completely different story. Better not listen to it. The only useful information is the reopening of the Aperture Drama Project. You should not miss it, so find your way back to the passage. But first you have to open the emergency gate that had been closed after Gunard's escape. Go back to the tower and use the two switches within three seconds. After passing through the gate, turn around. You can spot the passage in the distance - the place where you have jumped down to the platforms entering the Dark Zone. Shoot a red portal at the wall. The blue portal at the foot of the tower should still be there. If not, shoot it there again and step through.
08 / The Passage 2
Follow the passage to the central square. On the opposite side, another passage leads to the Drama Project, but, unfortunately, the emergency measures, caused by Gunard's escape, are still in operation, showing up in the form of a closed gate. Use the secret opening routine for Aperture executives: Push the four lights in the light containers at the corners of the sqare, turning them red.
At the end of the passage, across the Dark Zone, you see the entrance area of the Aperture Drama Project. Shoot a red portal at the wall, a blue portal next to you, and step through.
08 / The Theater
This is it. Enter through the door to meet Gunard, waiting to greet you. After he has left backstage, you are free to look at the theater posters all around the foyer. After a while, the doors to the theater will open. Walk to the middle somewhere between second and sixth row. After the theater doors have closed, the show begins. Maybe it was a good idea to free Gunard after all.
